BMW Open - München

Our customer, ProSieben AG, came to our Design Studio and asked if we could create a new website for the biggest tennis tournament in Germany, the BMW Open in Munich. The deadline was in two months, and we agreed. It was a pretty tough journey for me personally because all amendments were accepted very slowly. Working with large companies is not the same as working with startups; in big companies, there are entire departments and numerous managers through whom even the smallest changes must pass, and at any stage, they can be rejected. This was a new challenge for me and a valuable experience.

This is a website whose primary goal is to sell tickets through a link to an external service, and the secondary goal is to provide information about the tournament and how to get there.

The work began with UX research, specifically analyzing competitors and creating a structural concept. I reviewed all possible types of sports, selected the best projects in my opinion, and noted their strengths and weaknesses, as well as potential future features that could be added next year.

SOLUTIONS
CHALLENGES

✦ Overcomplicating design that sometimes has poor accessibility.

✦ Limited time for launching the project live, while at the same time, long decision-making processes at the company's headquarters.

✦ Through preliminary research, it became clear that most sports websites were designed in the early 2010s. A solution was needed that would help the site stand out without being too flashy.

SOLUTIONS

✦ The customer wanted to use his own palette, which included a very bright green, so it was decided to use it very carefully and selectively to ensure that accessibility was always maintained at least at the AA.

✦ The correct project timeline was created and presented to the customer so that we could always clearly understand which stage we were at.

✦ It was decided to primarily use a white background to focus the user's attention on the elements and content, interspersed with colorful inserts.

I started with the structural concept of the future project. It had to be more complex than the previous one. After completion, we provided it to BMW management for approval and waited for the result. In the end, we created a unique homepage and other pages that could be built using UI elements like a constructor.

From the information we received from our customer, it was clearly understood that a large number of users access the site via mobile phones, about 71% of the total. Therefore, we paid special attention to the mobile adaptation to ensure that users would find it as convenient to use the site on mobile as on desktop. In the end, post-tournament analytics showed that 83% of users were on mobile devices.

It was an amazing experience to work with such large companies like ProSieben and BMW. It taught me that I always need to be flexible, and solutions that work with one stakeholder don't always fit another. My main responsibility was the UX part and some UI solutions for the homepage and general color scheme.
